The the College of Horticulture and Gardening at Yangtzeu University was established in 1985. Currently the College possesses the Department of horticulture and the Department of landscape. The School has 4 undergraduate programs (Horticulture, Gardening, Tea and Forest protection), which lead to bachelor degrees in 4 years. The School has 1 doctoral program in second Level Disciplines: Resources and Utilization of horticultural plants, and 1 master’s programs in First Level Disciplines: landscape Architecture. There are also 2 programs for graduate education (Master of Horticulture and Master of Agricultural Extension), which lead to Professional master’s degree in 2 years. In 2012, the Ministry of Education released the latest appraisal of all the first-level disciplines and the landscape Architecture of the School ranked No. 7 in the nation. The landscape Architecture in First Level Disciplines is also the Cultivation of Hubei province key discipline.
The School employs 48 full-time faculty members including 10 professors and 16 associate professors. Its full-time student body is about 1000, including postgraduates, undergraduate students. In the School, there is 1 discipline approved for Chutian Scholar positions, in which 1 Distinguished Professors, 3 chair professors and lecture professors are invited.
The School has botany garden, Bonsai garden, citrus garden, protected horticulture and Germplasm Resources Garden of Ornamental plants. It has 15 Off-Campus Practical Educational Base, 3 Central and Local Government Joint Development Project ‘The Laboratory of Plant Resources and environment’, ‘The Laboratory of Stress Physiology for horticulture plants’, ‘The Laboratory of Horticulture Plant and Breeding’, 1 platform for research and innovation ‘The platform for Germplasm Resources innovation of landscape plant’.
In the past five years, over 100 national and provincial projects had been carried out at the School of Horticulture and Garden. Among them, 17 projects won the Provincial and ministerial level scientific and technological progress Award, Natural Science Award of Provincial and ministerial level. 10 patents have been authorized; 3 plant varieties have been developed; over 100 papers have been retrieved by SCI, EI, and ISTP.
